Six Whiskeys – Six Haikus

1.

Whisper of peaches,

Burning gold of late summer:

The almond trees sigh

2.

Just a faint tickle,

Playful game of strawberries:

Chocolate anise

3.

Childhood cherry scent,

Slow burning field of blond wheat;

Drifts off with the wind…

4.

Rhubarb's subtle tang

Yields to warm raisin syrup,

And deep gold echoes

5.

Ancient ancestor,

Rubber, copper, ethanol:

Fire into ashes

6.

Pure, easy, wafting,

Warm carmel and dry grass;

Skips away like mist

A friend invited some of us around last night to blind taste six whiskeys, bourbons, and ryes. Above are the haikus I wrote in response to (and under the influence of) each one. They appear as I wrote them, unedited, for better or worse. First lines address aroma, second lines taste, last lines the finish.

For the record, number four was my favorite and the group favorite (by one vote.)

That's a really cool idea. I like number six most but they all have nice lines. I did Haikus at university and they are devilishly deceptive in their construction.

cheers
